Style Trends from High Point Furniture Market
A visit to High Point Market, the world’s largest international home furnishings trade show, always results in style trend inspiration.
Every year buyers come from all over the world to High Point, North Carolina, to see what’s new in the furniture industry and to buy for their studios and showrooms.
The Benjamin Moore color, First Light, the 2020 color of the year, was seen in many display vignettes, and accessories like pink were the focus for many showrooms. As they were seen in sofas, chairs, artwork, accessories, and rugs. It was a pleasure to see such color used in many ways that incorporated that soft, airy, warm feel of light. Also, in a showstopper, an eye-catcher was the color navy blue paired with white and gold. The most prevalent that stood out was the Thibault showroom. Their line of wallpaper, window treatments, sofas, and accessories made me feel good about my last grand foyer project completed earlier this year.
High Point Market Highlights in 2020
One of the market highlights was attending a keynote talk by Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton for her new industrial chic lighting line for Aidan Gray. ‘Diane was funny and comical and also spoke of how she designed her home with inspiration from Pinterest and also promoting her new book The House That Pinterest Built. After the talk, I walked to the Aidan Gray showroom to take in the new lighting collection. Large-scale pendant lights in white and gray veining and black with veins. Her lighting collection promoted an industrial-chic look. Patterns of plaids, veins, and crosses embellished the neutral color shades.
Celebrity designers are on the rise. Libby Langdon debuted her new line of furnishings with Fairfield Chair. Meeting Libby was such a pleasure. Her down-to-earth personality shines through in her furniture designs as well. Well curated for the everyday lifestyle. Another newcomer to Market was Sasha Bikoff, a young designer who curated Currey and Company’s showroom. Using pink, murals, exciting lighting, and art mural installations. Sasha is genuinely a one-to-watch up-and-coming designer.
Making a comeback in home furnishings styles was the traditional look. It seems to be prevalent in many showrooms. With light and bright fabrics but also saturated colors. Contemporary looks with a warm, inviting feel were also noted. However, light and airy were mixed with many pops of color. The American leather showroom was quite interesting as well. Still keeping with their traditional look of leather sectionals and chairs, a pleasant style change was noted. Bright and colorful leathers were available for the not-so-traditional style lover. Their colorful chair wall was a breath of fresh air. Colors in pinks, purples, greens, and yellows provided a soft, warm, inviting feel to a bright white space.
Antique and Design Center at High Point Market
Not only were there new furnishings, accessories, and rug showrooms, but the Antique and Design Center at High Point Market is also something to be seen. Of course, I was drawn to these styles every day. Antiques from France, Paris, and Italy are all in one spot to select from. Procuring shipping is conveniently available in the antique section, which makes it easy to purchase one of these very large pieces.
The furniture market is not just for furniture buyers. Interior designers flock to High Point Market, the biannual furnishings market of the world. Industry panel talks, keynote speakers insider tours are all available for interior designers.
Tom Conley, President and CEO of High Point Market Authority noted in his keynote opening speech that interior designers now make up 50% of the attendees that flock to High Point Market twice a year. Although this is an industry market to the trade only, it is also the industry’s educational mecca on trends and styles and what’s new and happening in home décor. If you are interested in interior design or want to become an interior designer, it’s a good idea to keep up with what is happening at High Point Market every year.
