Spring 2020 One Room Challenge - Week 3 Drywall and Tile Install for Mudroom/Guest Bathroom
Our mudroom guest bathroom project is really moving along. Our Week 3 has seen a lot of activity. I have to thank my contractors for making this project a priority. Our kitchen renovation is happening at the same time and is dragging a bit. We are living with a plastic divider wall and zipper doorway to our condensed living space and makeshift kitchenette due to all the construction, but know it is worth the wait. If you missed Week 1 and Week 2 be sure to check out our beginning process.
Walls and Floor Tile
The drywall has been installed and it’s such a nice division of the two spaces. Defined mudroom entrance from the garage and private bathroom goals have been achieved. The installation of the Thassos marble hexagon tile floor has been completed and, I have to say, it is gorgeous! Millwork and moldings for the mudroom have been chosen. I wanted to follow through with the same design that we began with on the second-floor master bedroom, family room, and master bathroom renovation so that decision was fairly easy.
Mudroom Bench and Shower Walls
The construction of the mudroom bench seat has begun. I have templated the seat of the bench myself in order to have the fantasy brown in leather finish granite seat cut. Or is it marble? Fantasy Brown is categorized as marble because of the mineral calcium carbonate which is a feature of marble. However, it has a low risk of etching or staining and behaves like a quartzite. The marbling in the stone for the bench seat will bring up the ming green color from the marble hexagon mosaic on the floor in this space. Fingers crossed I measured and drew out the template correctly as the stone will bleed into the door frame to the garage. I drove the template to my fabricator myself in order to have it in time for the big reveal as they are backlogged with template appointments and I was afraid I wouldn’t get in installed in time.
Shower Walls
The shower wall tile installation is happening and the drama factor that I wanted to create is also coming to life. Now that we have the mudroom and the bathroom divided, both contractors can work in each space without being in each other’s way. The bathroom vanity has also been placed in the bathroom to use for gauging the end of the shower wall tile as it comes close to the vanity and we need space for the shower door to be installed.
The plumbing fixtures and lighting have been delivered and waiting to be uncrated and installed. Once the shower tile installation is complete, the final plumbing fixtures can be installed and lighting can be installed. Which will happen before the painting and wallpapering as Larry the painter and paper hanger schedule has changed. He will be the last contractor to come in unless his schedule opens up.
This project has gone very smoothly and the push to get it all completed in time for the reveal is definitely happening. However, with Memorial Day Weekend approaching, I’m nervous that we will loose four days of progress.
Thank you for following along and watching our mudroom guest bathroom come to life, bye bye pink!
