One Room Challenge Spring 2020 - Week 8 Final Reveal. No More Pink Bathroom...Hello WOW Mudroom and Guest Bathroom!
Week 8 is here and started off with an overwhelming feeling that I wasn’t going to have enough time to search for accessories and style the mudroom and guest bathroom before the photoshoot that happened on Monday morning. Monday arrived and I still felt a bit unsure about some of the items I was planning to use. However, everything worked out in the end. Using the less is more theory, I didn’t have to use every gardening tool, seashell, and sand dollar collected. Still, the feeling of home and memories resonate in this space.
Running through the project from beginning to end. The 10’ x 10’ space that was covered in pink from the floor tile, pink sink, and pink toilet as well as an oversized shower and laundry room needed a total gut reno. Here’s a little back story of the space.
The Backstory
After our master bedroom bathroom remodels upstairs, I had an entry door from the new addition garage installed in the pink bathroom to replace the window by the toilet. The renovation for the pink bathroom wasn’t on our agenda at that time. I was tired of walking around to the front door which is located on the side of our home due to the fact that we have a postage size seaside lot. This now meant that we would walk into the pink bathroom from the garage in order to come straight to the kitchen, and one would be walking into the pink toilet. I was willing to live with this small design flaw detail in order for us to have straight access to the kitchen from the garage.
Now here we are 3 years later and have created a charming mudroom with a door from the garage and a straight walk-thru directly to the kitchen. Also, a private guest bathroom was created and separated by a pocket door off of the mudroom.
Selecting Fixtures and Finishes
I knew I wanted to bring in a bit of green, the recycled glass color green into this renovation project as I always had in my mind I wanted to use Currey and Company’s Braithwell flush mount recycled glass light fixture somewhen in my house. Well, the mudroom was going to be the place. Knowing that selecting a mosaic floor tile was next as I wanted something interesting in the mudroom that would work with the existing porcelain plank tile in the kitchen. Disappointment set in when I was told the Thassos marble mosaic in ming green was discontinued. That was the tile! However, when I double-checked again, some of the numbers were transposed when the distributor checked and we were in luck. Hexagon, ming green Thassos lives! That was all I needed to take off running.
Dramatic was the mission for the guest bathroom. Mixing fixtures and metal finishes were also on my list of wants for this space. The drama came through the large porcelain 12” x 24” large format tile for the shower walls and ceiling. Paired with the large format tile was a small mosaic chosen for the shower floor tile in ivy pattern Carrara marble. I loved it so much that I had the installer put it on the front-facing side of the shower threshold and but up to the ming green hexagon floor tile. Mixing patterns is what I love to do best. Adding a large format wallpaper with the King Protea from Sanderson, just the final element for the space. Drama was achieved and from a design point of view, mixing small, medium, and large patterns was also checked off.
The Renovation Process
Here is the easy step by step process and scope of work to follow if you are considering a bathroom renovation.
Step 1: Planning
· Create your vision through a floor plan layout
· Confirm walls to be removed
· Confirm location of new plumbing fixtures
· Draw up an electrical plan
· Line up your contractors or you may be the DIY contractor yourself
· Obtain estimates for scope of work from each contractor
Step 2: Demo
· Demo Day happens
· Plumber comes in to run water lines and rough plumbing
· Electrician comes in to run electrical wires to all locations needed
· Walls – Insulation and drywall gets installed / mud and tape happens with plaster
· Flooring – tile floors begin once the walls are in place
· Shower - if tiling, this will happen next
· Finish millwork and moldings get installed
· Optional: paint on walls can happen here or can wait to the final step
The Final Finish
· Plumbing fixtures installed
· Lighting fixtures installed
· Final paint and paper installation
· Shower door installation
Having a game plan of attack for your remodel project will ensure that it runs smoothly. Although there is almost always a glitch in every remodeling project. This pink bathroom remodel ran like clockwork. I’ve had the plan completed for a few years but there was always another remodel project in the house to work on and client projects as well before tackling the pink bathroom. Remembering the before photos of this space makes me cringe.
A Special Thank You to the Team
A special thank you to Megan Booth of Megan Booth Photography for capturing all the details of these two combined spaces. When now walking into our home from the garage, charming is the feel I wanted to create from every entry of our home. Now we have that feeling from the garage entry as well.

This complete project could not have been done without these contractors and vendors. I am very fortunate to have such a wonderful network of people who not only help on my own home but are right there at a calls notice when I need them on a client project.
Renovation can be a fun project if all your ducks are in a row. Scheduling on the other hand can be a project manager’s and designer’s worst enemy. My best advice is to enjoy and embrace the process. The final outcome will be worth the wait.
Once again I want to thank Linda Weinstein, the creator of the One Room Challenge for the opportunity to be involved in the One Room Challenge as a guest participant, and also for the ORC sensitivity and support for the Black Lives Matter Community.
