One Room Challenge Fall 2020 Week 3 - Guest Bedroom Makeover

Our Guest Bedroom Makeover Hits a Few Snags in Week Three

Week three has brought a lot of anxiety to this One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover progress. Every day this week ran into the other. On the road between 6:30 and 7:30 every morning to see clients and contractors on site left little time to concentrate on anything else.

Roadblock Number One

The week started with having to deal with letting go of our painter, which has put a minor damper on the progress of our guest bedroom makeover. This room has been primed, and molding has been painted. However, by losing the painter, we need to meet the deadline for the flooring refinisher to come in on November 1st. This is when the wood floor sanding will begin to be transformed into the dark Jacobean stain finish that will set the stage for this guest bedroom sanctuary.

Roadblock Number Two

The second roadblock of Week 3’s progress was when we found out that it wasn’t as easy as usual to get a mattress and box spring delivered. It is going to take a total of 5 to 6 weeks. It could be sooner but still nerve-racking when planning for installation day. The dreaded air mattresses may have to be substituted until they arrive. However, some good progress has been made, and a few boxes have been checked off.

The discontinued fern pattern fabric for window treatments has been replaced. Not the botanical I had hoped for, but regardless, I did find some fabric that fit the mood and feel of the space for the drapes.

Accessory Shopping at HomeGoods

Needing a little creative reprieve from these minor dilemmas that this project has brought on this week, I decided to take an afternoon shopping excursion for accessories. Seeking the unique and different for the guest bedroom makeover, I hit some of the vintage shops in my area. Finding some interesting and charming little items that would have made it to my RAW Furnishings inventory but are perfect for pops of color.

A colorful floral ceramic vase that will sit nicely on the gray dresser. This piece has all the colors in the fabric for the bench seat cushion. Another fun piece was the ivory and green stripe plant pot that will add some life to one of the nightstand tables.

I also ventured into HomeGoods to browse for some accessories. I was lucky enough to find ocelot-patterned euro-style pillows in gray and white, which will be a nice addition to the white bedding duvet. I also found another fun piece at HomeGoods. A bright green base accent lamp with a white linen shade for the top of the dresser and a distressed white framed mirror to fit perfectly over the gray dresser. I couldn’t help myself as I was on a roll and found an accent gray and white geometric patterned club chair. This is the perfect size for the corner of the window bench and for guests to curl up and read a book.

Liz Roache Saves the Day

The exciting highlight of Week 3 was meeting with color artist Liz Roache. Using her Fabulous Flowers design would be the perfect pop of color and wow factor for this bedroom. Meeting Liz at her studio in the Boston Design Center and deciding on a perfect color scheme was the most exciting part of the project so far. Whenever I get to collaborate with Liz Roache is a perfect day!

Fingers crossed, all will go well with the painting of the Benjamin Moore Lingerie color walls, and the floor refinishing starts on Sunday, November first. This will bring us right into the deadline for our guest bedroom makeover, and hopefully, our mattress and box spring will arrive early and in time for our final installation and reveal.

I want to thank Linda Weinstein, the creator of the One Room Challenge, once again for creating this motivational design event.
